1. Core principles
SpeakJapaneseNative can be used without creating an account. Learning progress, practice recordings and downloaded content are stored mainly on your device. Data needed for an online feature is sent to the relevant service only when you choose to use that feature.
2. Data we handle
Data stored on your device
- Learning progress, practice history and preferences.
- Practice audio that you choose to record.
- Downloaded scenes, audio and cached AI-generated audio.
Data sent when you use an AI feature
- Pronunciation assessment: the recording you submit and the corresponding Japanese text.
- AI speech: Japanese text that you enter or recognise and choose to turn into audio.
- Grammar guidance: Japanese text that you choose to analyse and status information needed to complete the request.
Camera and photos
The camera or photo library is used for text recognition only when you choose Scan Text or Photos. We do not intentionally upload the full image for text recognition. Recognised text is sent only if you then choose an AI feature, as described above.
Device, purchase, notification and operation data
- An anonymous installation identifier, device and app version, language and time zone, used for allowances, updates, diagnostics and basic product analytics.
- Purchase status and transaction identifiers from Apple and RevenueCat, used to show, restore or revoke access.
- A push notification token and notification preferences if you allow notifications.
- The feedback category and message you submit, together with limited operating context needed to investigate it.
3. How we use data
- To provide downloads, playback, recording, pronunciation assessment, AI speech and grammar guidance.
- To verify purchases, refresh AI allowances and reflect restored, refunded or expired transactions.
- To send learning reminders and content update notifications that you have allowed.
- To confirm that core features work, diagnose faults and improve product flows.
- To respond to feedback and requests for new learning situations.
- To prevent API abuse, duplicate allowance deductions and abnormal requests.
Product analytics events do not include free-practice text, complete sentence content or the recordings themselves.
4. Service providers
The following services may process data needed to provide a specific feature:
- Apple: App Store, StoreKit, push notifications and device verification.
- RevenueCat: in-app purchase status and entitlement synchronisation.
- Microsoft Azure: Japanese speech generation and pronunciation assessment.
- DeepSeek: Japanese grammar requests that you initiate, routed through our backend.
- Appwrite: content catalogues, cloud functions, allowances, analytics events and user feedback.
Each provider processes the data needed for its service under its own privacy terms. We use these services only to the extent needed for the corresponding feature and require processors acting on our behalf, under applicable agreements, to provide protection consistent with this policy and applicable law.
5. Your choices and controls
- You can change microphone, camera, photo and notification permissions at any time in iOS Settings.
- If you do not use an AI feature, the corresponding text or recording is not sent to that AI service.
- You can clear local learning data, recordings and caches from the app's settings.
- You can manage subscriptions, restore purchases or request a refund through Apple.
- To ask about or request deletion of server-side data linked to your anonymous installation identifier, contact us at the address below.
6. Retention and security
Grammar-analysis jobs and their server-side results are normally deleted within 24 hours of creation. TTS text and pronunciation recordings are relayed by our backend to complete the request and are not kept as cloud learning records. Purchase, allowance, abuse-prevention, analytics, notification and feedback data is kept only as long as needed to provide the relevant function, resolve disputes, investigate faults and meet necessary obligations.
We use reasonable safeguards such as access controls, encrypted transport and server-side validation, but no internet service can guarantee absolute security.
7. Children
The app is intended for general Japanese learners and is not directed primarily at children under 13. Minors should use networked features and purchases with a parent or guardian's knowledge and consent.
8. Changes to this policy
We will update this page and its last-updated date if features or data handling change materially. We may also provide an in-app notice for significant changes.
